Best Practices for Using LCMPT (newly revised and expanded!!)

Colleagues, I’m pleased to announce the release of the expanded, revised 2016 edition of the document Best Practices for Using LCMPT. Based on feedback from the community and over a year of collective experience applying LCMPT terms in cataloging since the release of the vocabulary, this revision is considerably more robust than the original “provisional” version of the document. Detailed guidance is now present for the following areas: 382 subfields e and v Continuo Electronics Operas and other dramatic works Percussion Separately-manifested parts The terms “singer” and “voice” The terms “string orchestra” and “bowed string ensemble” There are also significantly more examples in this revised version. And content has been harmonized with the parallel document Best Practices for Using LCGFT for Music Resources. I would like to heartily thank the working group within the Vocabularies Subcommittee who painstakingly prepared this revision, as well as numerous other CMC members who offered feedback during

RDA Toolkit and MLA Best Practices update

The February 9, 2016 release of the RDA Toolkit included a variety of revisions to MLA’s Best Practices and the supplements.  BP 1.7.5 now includes recommendations related to typographical devices used as separators (as in Colchester · Essex · England) and symbols that cannot be reproduced (such as the four symbols that form the title of Led Zeppelin’s otherwise untitled fourth album).  BP 2.3.1.7 now includes guidance applicable to scores bearing a stated voice range.  BP 2.3.2.8.1 now includes guidance for how to treat a phrase that introduces a medium of performance (as in “with an accompaniment for a violin”).  BP 2.4.1.1 now includes an example of an audio recording bearing a statement of responsibility for the performer and a separate statement of responsibility for the composers.  BP 2.8.4 now includes guidance on when to treat a trade name as a series title instead of a label name.  BP 2.15

Encoding Standards, Linked Data, BIBFRAME at Midwinter

Interested in linked data, BIBFRAME or MARC news from the recent ALA Midwinter 2016 in Boston? I’ve written up minutes to several of the meetings I was able to attend during the conference, and these should be of particular interest to folks with an interest in encoding standards. Some trends: Full BIBFRAME implementation remains on the horizon, though closer than before. MARC is definitely not dead, though it definitely is eyeing a linked data future. Small linked data projects abound, and they seem closer to knitting together to form useful interfaces and tools. Some linked data practitioners are getting more interested in the social space around their work, and are looking closer at issues of diversity, inclusiveness and privacy.
