MLA-CMC at Winter 2024 ALA and MAC Meetings

CMC will be representing MLA’s interests at three upcoming Winter 2024 meetings in the next month: the MARC Advisory Committee (MAC), ALA Core’s Core Subject Analysis Committee (SAC), and ALA Core’s Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access (CC:DA). MAC will be meeting virtually Wednesday-Thursday, January 24-25, 10:30 am-1:30 pm EST each day. Meetings are free and open to observers. Access links are posted to the MARC listserv shortly before each meeting. The MAC agenda is available now. MLA is the author of Proposal No. 2024-01, Recording Numeric Designation of Musical Expressions in the MARC 21 Bibliographic and Authority Formats. MLA-CMC at Upcoming Summer 2023 ALA and MAC Meetings

CMC will be representing MLA’s interests at three upcoming meetings: ALA Core’s Core Subject Analysis Committee (SAC) and the MARC Advisory Committee (MAC) in June and ALA Core’s Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access (CC:DA) in July. SAC will be meeting virtually June 14, 15, 16, 2023 from 1:00-3:00 pm CST (2-4 Eastern) each day. Meetings do not require a registration fee and are open to all interested guests, who may participate via Zoom chat and come and go throughout. To attend, you will need to register for a Zoom link that will admit you to all three meetings. The agenda and the liaison reports, including MLA’s, are posted to the SAC ALA Connect public site as they arrive. Joint MLA/OLAC 33X/34X Final Recommendations Redux

The final report summarizing the work of a joint MLA/OLAC task group which worked to address issues connected to 23 additions to the Genre/Form Code and Term Source Codes list (https://tinyurl.com/y7tzhr32), which are utilized in the 33X and 34X fields, was issued in late 2017. The group was charged with examining three issues: inconsistent treatment of RDA and non-RDA terms in MARC 344 and 347, consideration of consistent treatment of MARC 344 and 347 across formats, and implementation of the new $2 source codes. A question regarding the use of the new $2 source codes was recently raised. Just to be clear, the intent of the recommendation for issue 3 was that whenever separate MARC 34X fields would be required due to multiple applicable $2 source codes, to use separate MARC 34X fields – with the implication that the new source code would also be applied. MLA’s MARC Proposals Supported by MARC Advisory Committee

I will be posting a link to some extensive notes about happenings at ALA Annual of interest to folks interested in all things encoding standards. But until then I wanted to share the news that MLA’s three MARC proposals were approved by the MARC Advisory Committee to move forward to the MARC Steering Group. The three proposals in question: 2016-09: Recording Distributor Number for Music and Moving Image Materials in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format 2016-08: Redefining Code Values in Field 008/20 (Format of Music) in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format 2016-07: Defining Subfield $3 in Field 382 of the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format Thanks very much to everyone who worked on the proposals or provided feedback!
